Why a Walk-In Lunch Helps in the Barossa
The Barossa is famous for long winery lunches, and they're popular. The state tourism guide's own advice for visitors is to book restaurants, tastings and transport ahead on weekends. That's great if you've planned a long lunch. It's less great if you're travelling with kids, you've lost track of time between cellar doors, or you simply want a good feed without the ceremony.
That's where we come in. Barossa 50's Diner is walk-in only: no bookings, no set menus, no time slots. You order at the counter, find a red vinyl booth or a seat outside, and your food comes out made to order.
When We Serve Lunch
Lunch runs from opening time every trading day:
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 12:00 – 4:00pm |
| Tuesday | Closed |
| Wednesday | 12:00 – 4:00pm |
| Thursday | 12:00 – 8:00pm |
| Friday | 12:00 – 8:00pm |
| Saturday | 11:30am – 8:00pm |
| Sunday | 11:30am – 8:00pm |
On Mondays and Wednesdays we close at 4pm, so those are lunch-and-milkshake days. Thursday to Sunday we trade through to 8pm, which means a late lunch or an early dinner both work. Hours can vary on public holidays, so if you're driving up specially, give us a call on (08) 8563 2371 first.
School holidays: open 7 days
We're normally closed on Tuesdays, but during South Australian school holidays we open 7 days. The Department for Education's 2026 dates are:
- Spring holidays: Saturday 26 September to Sunday 11 October 2026
- Summer holidays: Saturday 12 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027
What to Order for a Quick, Filling Lunch
Everything is on the full menu, but here's how regulars tend to approach lunch:
- The full diner lunch: a burger or a hot dog with fries, and a shake. The burgers are named after the cities and stars of the 50s, from the Dallas (the lot, egg and beetroot included) to the Montana with a house-made brisket patty.
- Something lighter: a toastie (the Hamptons, Baltimore or Miami) or a salad, such as the Caesar or the Ranch.
- Share plates for the table: loaded fries like the Chicago (gravy and cheese) or the Arizona (bacon, BBQ sauce and cheese), Nevada nachos or onion rings.
- Vegetarian: the Vegas crumbed-vegetable burger and the fried halloumi burger, plus fries, wedges, smoothies, shakes and sundaes.
- For the kids: nuggets and fries, a hot dog, a spider drink or a kid scoop of ice cream from the ice creamery.
If you're the designated driver for a cellar door day, the drinks list is built for you: thickshakes and milkshakes, frappes, smoothies, coffee and the American drinks fridge with Dr Pepper and A&W.
Fitting Lunch Into a Barossa Day
Tanunda sits in the middle of the valley, which makes Murray Street an easy place to regroup. From the diner it's about 7 minutes' drive to Nuriootpa, 10 to Angaston and 15 to Lyndoch, so you can do a morning of tastings, stop for lunch, and head back out for the afternoon. Coming up from the city? Our Adelaide to the Barossa guide covers drive times and routes.
A few practical notes: there's street parking along Murray Street and nearby, we take cash and card, and there's indoor dining plus outdoor seating. If you're bringing a big group, send us a message through the form on our Visit page before you come.
And if you'd rather eat on the go, takeaway is available too: just order at the counter and take it with you.
